| The village of Los Barrios, as it is seen today, came into being during the early 18th century, particularly in 1704 when the former inhabitants of Gibraltar were driven out by the English who occupied the land. This group came to settle around the area of the Chapel of San Isidro, which eventually became a town center leading to its declaration as an independent municipality in 1756. Centuries before, Los Barrios, just like many of its neighbors, also endured Muslim & Christian territorial wars. The prolonged Muslim occupation ran from the 7th to the 14th century, and afterwards it was under Christian rule being in the control of the Duke of Medina Sidonia. Later it was relinquished to the Spanish crown in 1502.
