Already a part of Zahara in 1369, during the reign of Alfonso XI, the town of El Gastor were subdued by the domineering forces of both Muslims and Christians. In the 14th century, Rodrigo Ponce de Leon, a monarch in Cádiz built an agricultural and commercial center in the area. Farming and raising of livestock became its important preoccupations.
It was declared a village, separate and distinct from Zahara in 1834.
