Jerez stood witness, as a frontier, to clashes that transpired centuries ago, between the Moors and Christians. The town was conquered by the Moors many times until the late 12th century when it was re-conquered by Fernando III.
Later, his son, Alfonso, lost the town to the Moors again.
A Christian commander, Carillo, was caught alongside his troops but the Moors reconsidered and spared his life. This was to become a bad decision because Carillo later joined forces with Alfonso and regained the town of Jerez completely.
