History
Cadiz may be the oldest European city. The Phoenicians called it GADIR when they settled in the area in 1100 BC. They traded Baltic amber, British tin, and Spanish silver for a living. In the latter years, the Carthaginians made its way to the city. Afterwards, Cadiz became a marine port for the Romans for a while. Consequently, the Romans lost its hold over the city, then the occupancy of the Visgoths and Moors started(which didn t do much for the city s stature). In 1262, Alfonso X took over.

In the 16 th century, Columbus made Cadiz as the launching point for his navigation towards the newly discovered lands of America, thus giving Cadiz it s long-awaited opulence.

Cadiz was later on invaded by Sir Francis Drake, with a goal to take direct power of trade with the New World, even Napoleon's army didn t stand a chance to beat him.

During the early 19 th century, Cadiz served as a fortress of Spain's anti-monarchist, liberal movement, and it dawned the country's first Constitution in 1812.

Currently, even with the sight of its excellent historical structures, it s said to be one of the prosperous and most sophisticated cities in Spain. It only proves that the city has enormously progressed throughout the years.
