Resting on a hilltop some 248 meters above sea level, Castellar de la Frontera is located right in the center of the area of Gibraltar. The reservoir of the Guadarranque river can be found immediately below the town location and the mountain range of Malaga can be seen north of the area. Looking south, the coast of Africa can be viewed from Castellar de la Frontera on a bright and clear day. Castellar which means ‘site of the castle’ is only appropriate a name since the town is described as ‘A village within a castle.’ This castle’s exterior perimeter is still very well preserved and shows characteristics of structures from the Kingdom of Granada. The irregular walling is perched perfectly on the hill, bordered by the fortress towers, with houses and gardens within its walls and the Arch and the Palace jutting out beautifully.
