Christians conquered Benaocaz in 1485, and a short 5 years later, it was turned over by the Catholic Monarchs to Rodrigo Ponce de León as part of his family’s territory. But it was actually the Arabs who founded Benaocaz. Today the town continues to have an Arab feel to it, especially in the streets of Ave Maria and Progreso.
