Puerto Serrano was a Roman port in the time around 200 BC. The name of the town at this time was supposedly Marciago. The Muslims invaded in the 7th to 8th centuries AD and named the town Gailir. It became a province of Morón, one of the 21 provinces of the original Al-Andalus region under the Moors. The Muslims cultivated great orchards of olive trees which yielded high-quality olive oil.
The modern day Puerto Serrano was founded in the year 1615, when farmers of Morón obtained permission from the municipality to till the land and erect a new town. It became a villa still under the jurisdiction of Morón in 1805, until it received full autonomy in 1835.
