Torre Alháquime is a town rich in tradition. Yearly, there are numerous holidays and fairs that the locals of the town celebrate.
The year begins with the celebration of New Year’s Day on January 1. Then, come February, the Carnival is celebrated on the 20th. This is a very old tradition that is still practiced today. The Carnival usually lasts for 4 to 5 days and is marked with music and dance, merrymaking, fairgrounds, art exhibits and contests.
From March to April, the Lenten Season is observed. This is a very important Catholic season. The Semana Santa (“Holy Week”) takes place in April, which culminates in Easter Sunday.
On May 1, the Corpus Christi venerates the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic host. There is a lavish procession on this day, bearing the consecrated host around town.
In June, a romeria takes place in honor of the saint San Juan. This is a pilgrimage from the town to a holy shrine outside of town where the image of the saint has been put up. The actual day varies from year to year.
On August 14, the people of Torre Alháquime honor the saint San Roque. There is a fair and many other activities on this day.
November 1 is Todos Los Santos (“All Saints’ Day”), and finally, on December 25, the town celebrates Christmas Day.
