The Villamartín calendar of holidays and fiestas begins with New Years’ Day on January 1.
The Lenten season begins in February and ends in April, culminating with the Semana Santa (“Holy Week”) and Easter Sunday. This is one of the most important holidays in the whole of Spain, and a very solemn time.
At the end of July, Villamartín venerates its patron St. Ana.
Then, on the 8th of September, the locals undertake a pilgrimage to the Hermitage of the Virgin of the Mountains. Before dawn on this day, a mass is celebrated in the town parish. After the mass, the image of the Virgin is taken out of the church and, along with an escort, riders, and carrozas, taken in a procession to the shrine in the mountains. Another mass is celebrated at the shrine. Later in the month, between the 20th and the 24th, a fair is held to honor San Mateo. There is a big fair and cattle of different breeds coming from different areas are sold in the market.
