Originally called “Ximena,” this town has a past of bloom and doom.
Based on paintings found in caves, depicting a saga of different civilizations for centuries, long before the Christians came, this town was a military foothold in the 700s by the Moors. Iberians, Phoenicians, Arabs and the Romans had strong cultural influences on the town’s history.
Metal was mined from its soils which the Moors used to its full advantage during its wars. This gave Jimena its importance among local invaders.
Typically peaceful and endowed with rich soils and temperate climate, Jimena basked in prosperity with its abundant farm produce including livestock (primarily cattles), for centuries. But the Fall of Gilbraltar and the French Invasion almost toppled it to the ground.
Jimena was subdued twice by the Christians, until it was declared a town by Alfonso XII in the 1890s. In 1983, the Spanish Government formally declared JImena as a historical site.
At present, this town has a population of less than 10,000 comprised at 2% by many foreigners (mostly British) who, after having spent their leisurely vacations here, considered this tiny village as their new residence of choice.
